This is Sonja.

Last week I had the opportunity to capture a day in the working life of Sonja during this Corona crisis. She is a funeral director and therefore has a crucial profession.

If there’s an industry that has been confronted with a completely new standard nowadays, it is funeral care. Saying a last goodbye, honoring someone’s wish. It is in that moment where human contact can make a difference. Where the new normal is thirty people in one space and a meter and a half social distancing, you can imagine how sad these consequences are. This is the time that a huge amount of inventiveness is expected from funeral directors, and this is in addition to the already many qualities they must possess to practice this profession. During this day that I’ve spent with Sonja and Bas, who assisted her, I experienced that up close during this Surinamese burial.

This series is about people in vital professions. And this time about Sonja. She cares. She takes care of families, friends, acquaintances and of course the deceased… Saying a last goodbye is now extra complicated. But Sonja knows her way around this maze of new rules. She mainly looks ahead. During this time she prefers not to opt for video calling to have the first personal intake, but tries to arrange a walk to, for example, a park in the clients neighbourhood. And where there is no longer a book of condolence allowed to be signed (because yes, contamination lurks via a pen), Sonja has a box of pens in her bag. The people who want to leave a message just get their own pen. It’s these little-big details in which she excels. If there is one thing that has stayed with me this day, it is the love that Sonja has for her profession. Endlessly arranging, anticipating, making adjustments and taking great care, so that the next of kin and the deceased receive the best funeral they wished for.

Huge respect.

I am very grateful for the trust of Sonja in doing this photo reportage. And I am so proud of her. I would also like to thank the family who allowed me in their personal space during this sad and vulnerable moment in their lives.
